Fine Art Paper

Moab Slickrock Metallic Pearl

Moab Slickrock Metallic Pearl…it was a love affair from the first print. This paper with its rich feeling of depth reminded me of the ‘old days of film’ when I ordered cibachrome prints from transparencies (those of you who have cibachrome prints must understand my passion for this surface.) In fact my printer, an extraordinary craftsman whose lab was in his basement, was actually a source of inspiration for me to open this printing studio and provide this service for you.

This paper is a great option for photographers exploring all genres, but I also think that it would work great for tattoo artists who are looking for the right paper for their portfolios or for making large prints to exhibit in their studios. Moab Slickrock Metallic Pearl will give your images a crisp, sharp look and the colors rendered are pure luxury. This metallic digital paper is called glossy but it actually has a more subtle pearl finish (thus not like glossy paper that we like to associate with 70’s fashion.) Both color and black and white subjects shine and it produces amazing richness in blacks and almost has a three dimensional look to it. I’m so in love with this paper that I would venture to say that every one of you must have at least one image that would do well with this paper. Even painters with the right subject matter would be surprised by the life this paper would lend to your vision. Moab also makes a Metallic Silver paper which is thicker than my beloved 260gsm friend, but I rather like the thickness of this option. Enjoy!

Epson Hot Press Bright

Though I love the look of Moab’s Metallic paper, I am often looking for something that is not so “intense.” Epson’s Hotpress Bright has the ability to feature colors and blacks like glossy paper but with a more gentle delivery. This is a luxurious matte paper that will make your ‘blacks’ look like velvet and colors pop in ways that we don’t always associate with matte papers. Vibrant and saturated colors (yes even red!) come off beautifully as well as earth tones and completely black and white images with Hot Press Bright. Also, matte papers generally have a texture to them and we have a great selection of these, but this paper has an extremely smooth surface which is effective especially for portraits. Another great quality that is inherent with matte papers is that they can look stunning no matter what sort of lighting condition they find themselves in. You don’t have to worry about viewing angles and they look beautiful at all hours of the day. This is a great paper for both photography as well as fine art reproductions and I love what it does for abstract work. Even with a matte finish, images look crisp and still pop. If you don’t want the shine of the metallic paper and are looking for a smooth finish, this may become your new best friend! I have yet to find an image that does not look beautiful with this paper.

Canson Museum Pro Canvas Matte

One of my goals as a printing studio is to provide you with a broad variety of materials to print on so that as you consider the mood of your image you are able to complement that feeling with the perfect surface and material. Technology has brought so many options to support our ideas. Canson’s Museum Pro Canvas Matte is my favorite canvas material that I have tried. It is made with 100% pure cotton canvas so it does not have the ‘plastic’ look that many digital prints on canvas seem to have these days. This canvas has the supple feeling of cloth. It is thin and soft (for canvas) so it makes it easy to stretch over a frame if that is the presentation method that you are choosing. The image detail and colors are rich. This material works well for many subjects (even portraiture because the pores of the canvas are so small.) This material has an elegant feel to it that would work well especially for fine art reproductions. I am personally excited to use it for my photography as well. Enjoy!

Hahnemuhle Fine Art Baryta Satin

Hahnemuhle’s Fine Art Baryta Satin paper merges photographic paper with fine art matte paper. It’s not as intense as the metallic paper that we carry but it does have somewhat of a gloss (satin look) to it and it’s an excellent paper for those of you who are looking for a ‘photographic’ feel. The quality and richness of its blacks lend itself well for black and white photography. Yes…deep blacks for all of you with high contrast black and white images. It also supports a large color space and produces vivid colors. This is a great paper to choose if image sharpness is a main goal. Hahnemuhle says that this paper has a white base but it actually has a bit of a creamy feel to it so it’s almost a warmtone paper. This gives the paper a subtle glow due to the reflective coating it has. And it’s surface..it’s not entirely smooth. In fact, the texture has a slight depth to its grooves giving it a slight look of leather under certain lighting conditions. This is a brilliant paper. Hahnemuhle is one of, if not the oldest paper maker and they definitely have a passion for it. Thank you Hahnemuhle for your creativity!

Moab Moenkopi Unryu (Rice Paper)

I often come across artists who are looking to print their images on rice paper or cloth. We are stocking  possibly the best rice paper available. The Moab company website says that “Moenkopi is a Native-American name which was used to identify a mudstone layer of rock common in the Moab area. The world-famous Fisher Towers seen in many a John Wayne film, were formed in this strata. These unique towers seem to flow from the earth. It is fitting then that Moenkopi would be used to define our family of environmentally-friendly Japanese papers made primarily from Kozo (mulberry) fibers.” And the name “Unryu” literally translates as “cloud dragon paper” which provides fun associations as well. This paper is made in Tokushima, Japan at the Awagami Factory. The craftsmen use Japanese Washi techniques to create this unique paper made of mulberry and hemp fibers. Since this paper is specially coated to accept inkjet inks it can hold colors and tones fairly well. When you print on uncoated rice paper you will find that your images tend to look ‘muddy’ and flat.

This paper is meant to be used for specific types of images. The texture and fibers of this paper are visually apparent and it has a soft tactile feel to it. Every print will look different and you do not have control as to where the fibers will appear in your composition.  It tends to work best for more ethereal, possibly dreamy subject matter where the tones and colors lie in a mid to high-key tonal range. Moab’s Moenkopi Unryu offers many options with regard to presentation and art installation that can emphasize this paper’s delicate nature. This will work great for photography as well as painting reproductions. And it’s ecologically friendly so cheers to that!

Hahnemuhle Torchon

When I came across this paper, I developed a mild obsession. This paper, where the name ‘Torchon” means “coarse structure” in French, is unlike any other. I wouldn’t want this paper for a subject where people’s skin was a main component (who wants bumpy skin, right?), but I love it’s object-like feel and look. Whereas William Turner paper is rough to the touch, this paper is very smooth with a modelled texture. It’s very distinct and I haven’t seen it replicated by other paper companies. It feels thick and is luminous (thanks to its 96% whiteness rating). This paper features colors well and it loves to give you deep deep blacks too. Torchon is luxurious for the right image. And for fine art reproductions It will excite your collectors the moment they touch it. That’s all i have to say except to say… give it a try!

Hahnemuhle William Turner

There’s textured paper and then there’s William Turner. This paper is heavily textured. It’s rough and thick and very exciting to play with. You can pair this paper up with romantic imagery as well as popular urban decay and it will add dimension to both. This is an amazing paper for traditional artworks and works great for photography as well. Galleries, Museums and collectors will be happy with this paper. William Turner works great with detailed images and produces strong contrast and a wide color gamut (though not the best if you are looking for a broad tonal range in the darkest areas of your prints). Colors are vibrant! The ink soaks into the paper without bleeding. This may not be the best paper if you have lots of black negative space (it can be a bit delicate), but otherwise it is a stunning and substantial option in Paper & Ink’s lineup of paper choices. Think of the most rich and bold cup of coffee you have ever had and you have arrived at William Turner.

Canson PrintMaKing Rag

Canson Paper, who have been making paper since the 15th century, describes their PrintMaKing Rag as having a “fine and silky touch.” It is indeed exquisite and lends itself well for fine art prints as well as photography. This is the same company that is well known with water color painters as well as printmakers through their Arches line of paper. It has a bit of tooth, but is fairly smooth and is velvet to the touch. This paper also has a nice weight to it which puts it in the same class as the William Turner paper where it feels like an object. Canson is well aware of the quality standards of galleries and museums and are highly respected for their craftsmanship. PrintMaKing Rag is a beautiful paper and I immediately thought of my artist friends the moment I held it in my hands. I am eager to use it for my limited edition prints as well.
